The Mount (Edith Wharton Estate), Lenox, MA

The famous writer Edith Wharton designed and built this magnificent estate in Lenox at the turn of the century.  For many years The Mount was the destination for all the world’s cognoscenti, as lines of distinguished visitors waited patiently to seek audience with Ms. Wharton in the halls of this once great landmark.

Neglected and even abused by insensitive inhabitants over many decades, the sadly deteriorated estate was recently purchased by a non-profit organization to be scraped up and returned to its former glory, with the aim of opening its doors to the public as a national historic landmark.

ROA was responsible for renovations within certain parts of the existing building.  The purpose of these renovations was to satisfy needs identified for the new public use of the building.  It is worth noting how ROA’s designs for new work blend in so seamlessly with the old.
